Open Emotion Studios is a video-game development company, operating out of Limerick, Ireland since late 2009. The company was founded by 3 friends, Patrick Murphy, Mike Naughton and Colm English, whose goal was to produce the games they themselves would like to see on the market. From the beginning of 2010 they have switched focus solely towards the console gaming market with games like Mad Blocker Alpha, Ninjamurai and Revoltin’ Youth appearing on Sony Platforms. The company have been growing quickly, partly due to the success of the Studios first flash game, Mad Blocker which was a surprise success garnering over 2 million plays worldwide in it’s first month on general release. Ninjamurai was a huge success on the PS Minis platform and has poised the company to move into the larger digital distribution market.
The company followed up on Mad Blocker with a spin off jigsaw flash game based on the Mad Blocker franchise. Mad Jigga was released in March 2010 and although it was thought to have performed less favourably than Mad Blocker on general release, the game has been sold to several skill gaming websites. In April the company finished creating Beg1n: Abstract Differences which was met with a mixed response by the flash gaming community. Some found it too difficult, but die hard spot the difference players enjoyed the games abstract images and challenging gameplay. It received a very positive review on the casual gaming website, CasualGamerChick.com.
Open Emotions fourth game was purchased by MTV/Nickelodeon’s Addicting Games division in June 2010. Goldie’s Revenge has been a huge success with over 6 million plays worldwide. The game has since been translated into both Chinese and Russian and has proven to be a phenomenal success in those countries. In July 2010, after speaking with the people at Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, Open Emotion Studios began development of 2 titles simultaneously for the PS Mini’s service. The first game for PSP/PS3 was Mad Blocker Alpha which has garnered critical success getting a score of 9/10 from Ireland’s largest games website, The Gaming Liberty. Ninjamurai the companies second game has been receiving critical acclaim and was given 8.5 by top PlayStation Minis site, PSPMinis.com. Open Emotion will be releasing Revoltin’ Youth in summer 2011 on PSP and PS3 and the game features beautiful pixelated art and an extensive chiptune soundtrack with artist’s such as Sabrepulse, George and Jonathan and 8BitLegend.
Open Emotion Studios also takes pride in taking on Interns whenever possible and in the summer of 2010, OES took on 5 interns who have been instrumental in the development and conception of new brands on varying platforms. In the summer of 2010, Open Emotion interns have created 2 flash games, Pandamonium and Zombie Mart as well as an XNA version of Mad Blocker entitle Mad Blocker Live, Something they would like to expand upon. In January 2011, Open Emotion Studios took on another group of three Co-Op students, who are working on Android ports of Open Emotion’s flash games, as well as assisting with Open Emotion’s other upcoming titles in 2011. By June 2011 Open Emotion has grown to nearly 10 in house employees. In July 2011 Open Emotion Studios took on 2 new artists and in September 2011, Open Emotion will set up its Dublin and Tokyo offices.
Open Emotion Studios is currently working on two super secret and super awesome titles – More info on these will be dropped throughout 2011/2012 but for now see this article.
